We’re on a mission to make work better.

Business partners Nick Clover and Mike Gardner met back in the summer of 2015. Nick already had a successful business placing permanent hospitality candidates into exciting High Street restaurants across the UK.

Mike was looking for a new challenge after growing through the ranks of the UK’s biggest temp hospitality agency. Both had similar values and a passion for doing things the right way, people over profit. Realising there was a gap in the market for an agency with the same ethos, Appetite4Work was born with Mike as operational MD.

Starting initially in London, we had our first chef working just over a week later and quickly landed several more clients including Wembley Stadium. Since then the team has grown steadily and we now cover London, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire. All the way through we have maintained a commitment to ensuring that our people get looked after properly whether they’re part of our office team or picking up a 4 hour shift.

2015

Mike starts the business based in London

We establish our Surrey Team

Our first company conference is held in Bournemouth

We provide our first staff to Cheltenham Festival

2018

We establish our Reading Team and hire the first of what will become many apprentices

2019

Our second company conference is held in the sunshine of Marbella

We have our record year supplying 350,000 hours and filling 51,000 shifts

Mar 2020

Our biggest ever Cheltenham is swiftly followed by Covid

2020 - 2021

We win contracts to provide staff for Hospitals and Covid test centres keeping the business and our staff busy

2021

Hospitality starts to reopen and we are chosen to staff test events at Wembley Stadium

2022

We re-establish our London office, having our record ever year filling well over 100,000 shifts and establish our Sussex and Kent teams

2023

We hold our second all expenses 3 day trip to Marbs for the whole team

Managing Director

Mike started A4W in 2015 after an early career in Hospitality and Travel followed by 12 years with one of the national agencies. Mike's main role these days is setting the strategy of the business, client development and looking after the team. Day to day he’s still hands on at check-in’s and on site. After an impressive Hospitality Career taking in ski resorts and 5 star fine dining, Ella joined the team in 2021 looking after some of our most prestigious venues in London. Vilina started her career with an F+B internship in Miami before breaking into recruitment in 2019. After a break during Covid, Vilina joined us in 2021 quickly becoming an integral part of the team. James graduated from the University of Lincoln before starting a career in Hospitality working with Fullers. James spent 8 years working across several sites starting at the bottom and ending up as Assistant Manager of one of their hotels. Oliver started his career waiting tables in the Houses of Parliament before finding himself drawn into the world of Hospitality Recruitment with one of the biggest names in the industry. He quickly realised he had a natural ability to build relationships and a passion for sales, so moved into a purely business development role. After several years as a sales director with a major supplier, Oliver came back to Hospitality Recruitment to help us grow the business into new markets. Eleanor demonstrated a strong work ethic from an early age by taking on a part-time job whilst studying for her A-levels. During this time, she quickly developed excellent customer service skills, became adept at working within a team, and gained valuable experience in handling money. In her current position as a Finance Assistant, Eleanor manages both payroll and our busy helpdesk, ensuring that team members receive prompt and efficient responses to their queries.

I started my recruitment journey in 2017, but I have always been in hospitality. Working across pubs, branded restaurants, and more refined settings, hospitality is in my blood, and has been my whole career! I joined Appetite4Work because I wanted to join a smaller business, where I could really make an impact and grow within.

The team here has really allowed me to do this. It’s really good to work for a business that treats you like an adult, whilst giving you the autonomy to run your team almost as if it were your own business. Appetite puts its people first (both internal team, and the temps!), which allows us to really go the extra mile in delivering for our clients.

Having worked in restaurants and hotels for over 15 years, I decided to take the leap, try a new industry, and see what else was out there. I worked in an estate agency for a while and enjoyed the new challenges and seeing all the lovely houses, however it wasn’t long before I realised how much I missed the pace of the hospitality industry. 

Appetite4work matches the lifestyle and the ‘each day is different’ atmosphere I was missing, and I thoroughly enjoy every day I come into work. The every-day interaction with both clients and team members and matching the ‘right person for the right role’ is always exciting. The added benefit of working for Appetite4work is my great team of colleagues and managers.

Laura Hudson

Before starting with Appetite, I had been pursuing a career in the arts as a painter, dipping in and out of hospitality. I reached the point where I needed some more security. Early one morning, up with my 1-year-old, I found the perfect job advert for ‘chef recruitment assistant’ and applied straight away. 

Fast forward 2.5 years and I’ve never loved a job more. My role has progressed, I’ve learnt so much more about the business and my role has grown into looking after front of house staffing across Sussex and Kent. Every day is fast paced with constant reflection and planning. The whole team I work with is fantastic and everyone is always pushing themselves, and each other, to achieve. Appetite has a complete understanding of the demands of being a parent and has enabled me to juggle both.

Will Burden

Staffing and Recruitment Assistant

I was introduced to the hospitality industry as a young adult and spent many years progressing in my role from a bartender in a restaurant to a manager of an independent café, during this time I completed an NVQ in supervision, leadership, and hospitality. I developed a love for the industry and wanted to move away from the day to day running of an independent café. 

I joined Appetite4work in April 2022 and could not have been happier finding my place in BOH recruitment. I am extremely grateful to be able to help chefs find secure work placements, I believe this is a great fit for me as I am passionate about helping people as well as passionate about FOOD.
